How useful are 'blogs' and 'social media' technologies in the Satellite Industry?

For years the satellite industry has been at the cutting edge of the information revolution, enabling global communications and technologies that seemed like science fiction just a few years ago. Many people would be lost without technologies like sat-nav's and digital phones. Yet little thought is given to the industry that makes it all possible.
